Like ME NOW

iLikeZach.com in collaboration with Mindy Wyatt Gallery in Union Square, New York City are extremely proud to present a collection of paintings by 18 of the Greatest Artists in the City of New York at Mindy Wyatt Gallery (814 Broadway, 2nd Floor) entitled, "Like Me Now". An opening reception will be held on Friday September 9th from 6 - 8:30pm. The show is curated by Devin Kyle Cuthbertson, Jose Baez , SCRiBE The Verbalist, and Kenrick Zachary Theodore Cabey I (of iLikeZach.com).

In a moment of philosophical clarity, the late Sarah Lawrence professor and philosopher, Joseph Campbell, once said: "Myths are Public Dreams" and "Dreams are Private Myths". What happens when an artist's private narratives enter the conscious realm of others, when myths become public and are presented as "Artwork", perhaps even displayed at a gallery show?

"LIKE ME NOW" is the primal howl of artistic expression. This show is an attempt to demonstrate the fundamental creative moment living in Art, simultaneously demanding and pleading for its survival among the ranks of the beautiful. We will not celebrate the brushstroke, the chromatic scheme, or the provenance of individual pieces here. Instead, 15 New York artists will vindicate the aesthetic determinism existent in their very souls with their work for YOU, their audience. Like Me Now.

"Like Me Now" Will include paintings by :

Kenrick Zachary Theodore Cabey I ,Devin Kyle Cuthbertson, Scribe the Verbalist, Jose Baez , Ron Pazo, Joe Randazzo, Ford Guarino, Brittany Maldonado, Amy Ruhl, Julian Lynch, Kwanzaa, Soulebrity, Michael Ahn, PMD (Pimp McDaddy), CY Gavin, Alex Pawlicki, Big Val, Gerald Luvell and Alec Martin.

Opening Reception
Friday, September 9th, 2011 from 6p - 8:30p

Our creations are a way of tracking individual thought. Through visual probing with a sense of awe, we try to personally investigate and produce our interpretations of the convolution of existence we have experienced thus far. We attempt to bridge the gaps between memories, ideas, dreams, imagination, myths, and physical reality with a portrayal of out personal truths. This is an ongoing and ever evolving endeavor that strives to be focused and realized. In the process, specific aesthetics and techniques in tune with our own history, act as a medium to meld analytical thoughts and subconscious actions.

While taking different approaches visually, Daniel Krupin and David King, share a theme of investigating reality through the focused tunnel of the decay of authentic and structured surroundings. Daniel uses familiar suburban imagery with a surrealist twist to show that things are not as simple and pleasant as people would like to imagine. David has left behind conventional imagery and lets the canvas guide the viewer to one’s own thought on what is being represented. Both artists open a dialogue between common perceptions and the veiled decay of today’s society and the people caught within it.

dan krupin

Daniel York Krupin was born in 1984 in Smithtown, New York. He attended the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York City, where he received a BFA in Illustration in May of 2006.Initially focused on the draftsmanship of black-and-white pen and ink illustration, Dan transitioned to color through the medium of painting. But the focus to detail still remained in the surreal imagery of his compositions. There is a duality in his work, expressed through the recognition of the real world, juxtaposed with images from an on-going curiosity of the oddities and obscurities of life. Raised in the rural background of eastern Long Island, its landscapes seep their way into the settings of his paintings, where the viewer is met with the fascination of dreamlike inhabitants of an unusual world. Dan’s scenes are both familiar, yet strangely not.Dan Krupin was an assistant to the SoHo artist, Alan Sonfist. Independently, he has shown his work at Java Street Studio in Brooklyn, New York, and with the Arts 4 Bonac Tonic collective in Sag Harbor, New York. His artwork is tattooed on various clients, including NYC-based fashion designer Michael Houghton. As a member of the Antagonist Art Movement since 2008, Dan has shown numerous times at various East Village locations, including the Mindy Wyatt Gallery in October of 2009.

david king

David King was born in Oak Cliff, TX, where he was recognized for his artistic abilities from a very young age. After attending Booker T. Washington High School for the performing and visual arts, he moved to New York where he received a BFA in Illustration from SVA and an MFA in Painting from Brooklyn College. A prolific studio practice combined with an alchemical love of oil paint and its history has led to a conceptual dialogue between figurative transformation and the abstract essence of thought in time. It is this process that has taken the painter to new levels of sophistication in expressionistic painting. David has shown at various galleries and venues and has sold works nationwide.

Brian Gormley : New Paintings

The Mindy Wyatt gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of paintings by Brian Gormley, which features some of his largest and most powerful works to date. This show marks a long overdue return to his native New York by the artist maudit and perennial ‘outsider’, whose hyper-retinal painting style has long flown just beneath the radar of the art world elite, and will debut his largest scale canvas yet, the timely “Revenge of the Mayan calendar” (120”x185”). Gormley expands the discourse of contemporary art with his pioneering use of color technology and juxtaposed sampling of silkscreen abstraction. Gormley’s paintings are indebted to the vitality of New York’s streets as well as to the energy of Street Art. These multilayered canvases are intricate, sophisticated works attest that their maker is all about risk-taking. As the distinguished Irish critic Brian Fallon has noted, Gormley continues to expand upon a style which is Sui Generis”. Gormley’s paintings were recently featured in the museum show, “Studio in the Street, Street in the Studio” alongside works by Basquiat and Haring at the Brattleboro Museum in Vermont. He has exhibited regularly at the prestigious Hillsboro fine art gallery in Dublin, as well as in Vienna, Prague, Zurich, Rome and Mexico City. Gormley’s etching, The Malting Tower, is currently on view at the Ireland Museum of Modern Art, as part of Graphic Studio Dublin’s 50th anniversary.

Immortality Project

Featuring Works By Andres Bedoya, Kendel Bennett, Rachel Blackwell, Jesse Gelaznik, Giorgio Handman, Nicole Laemmle, Jonathan Osofsky, Charlotte Sims

Rafik is proud to present The Immortality Project, a group show exploring artists' meditations on death. Video, painting, drawing, collage and sculpture will be presented.

Life can be summed up as an elaborate and convoluted race against death. This is evident in many symbolic human actions, most dramatically in the creation of art. The artist creates a legacy of ideas and images that will transcend death. This show is a survey of artist's musings on death: attempts to outrun it through exercise, prayer, drugs, and the immortal artwork itself.
